Quick take
- An open-air weightlifting pen right on the Venice Beach Boardwalk
- Strongly associated with Golden Era bodybuilders and the Pumping Iron era
- Watched by passersby from the Boardwalk, which gives it a stage-like feel
- Hosts bodybuilding and physique events from time to time
- Steps from the sand, the skate park, and the basketball courts
If Gold's Gym Venice is the temple, Muscle Beach Venice is the stage. This fenced, open-air weight pen sits right on Ocean Front Walk, the Venice Beach Boardwalk, where lifters train under the sky while a stream of tourists, skaters, and locals watches from the other side of the fence. It is one of the most photographed workout spots in the world, and for many lifters it is the single most iconic image of Southern California fitness culture.
What is Muscle Beach Venice?
Muscle Beach Venice is an outdoor weightlifting area on Ocean Front Walk in Venice, Los Angeles, operated by the City of Los Angeles. Inside the pen you will find free weights, benches, racks, and machines set up on open ground just off the sand. It is a working training space, not a museum, and regulars still lift there.
The name "Muscle Beach" originally belonged to a stretch of sand in neighboring Santa Monica, just south of the Santa Monica Pier, where acrobats, gymnasts, and early bodybuilders gathered starting in the early 1930s. After that scene ended, the center of beach lifting shifted south to Venice. Today, "Muscle Beach" usually refers to this Venice pen, while the Santa Monica site is called the Original Muscle Beach. Why is Muscle Beach Venice famous?
A few reasons:
- The Golden Era connection. In the 1970s, Venice was the center of the bodybuilding world. Stars of that era, including Arnold Schwarzenegger and Franco Columbu, trained in Venice, and images of bodybuilders lifting in the sun by the Boardwalk became part of the culture's visual identity.
- Pumping Iron. The 1977 documentary helped turn the Venice beach-lifting scene into something the whole world recognized.
- The setting. There are not many places where you can deadlift with the Pacific Ocean in view and a crowd watching from a boardwalk.
- The events. The pen has hosted bodybuilding and physique contests over the years. Check the City of Los Angeles recreation department and local event listings for anything scheduled during your visit.
Can visitors go inside the pen?
Use of the equipment inside the pen is managed by the City of Los Angeles. Fees, hours, and rules are set by the city and can change, so check the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks for current rules and hours if you want to go in on your own. Facilities can also close for events, maintenance, or weather.
Most visitors simply watch from the Boardwalk, which is free and gives you the classic view. If you are on our tour, we see the pen from Ocean Front Walk and your coach tells its story on the spot.
What is it like to visit?
Muscle Beach Venice is unlike any other fitness landmark:
- It is a living scene. Regulars lift in the open air while people stop, watch, cheer, and take photos. It feels like a stage.
- The elements matter. Sun, wind, and sea air are part of the experience, and mornings can be foggy and cool.
- The setting is iconic. There are not many places where you can watch heavy lifting with the Pacific Ocean in view and palm trees overhead.
- The vibe is real. Regulars know each other. Be friendly and respectful.
Tips for visiting Muscle Beach Venice
- Go early for photos. Mornings are often calmer and cooler.
- Protect yourself from the sun. Sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and plenty of water. California sun is stronger than it feels in the sea breeze.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes. You will likely walk the Boardwalk in both directions.
- Travel light. The Boardwalk is busy. Bring only what you need and keep valuables close.
- Ask before photographing people. The regulars are not tourist attractions. Film yourself and your group, and ask anyone else first.
- Mind the rules posted at the gate. The city sets them, and staff enforce them.

- The beach itself, and the bike path that runs along the sand
Muscle Beach Venice on The Golden Era LA Tour
On The Golden Era LA Tour, the group comes here right after our stop at Gold's Gym Venice. Your coach tells the story of the pen and the beach-lifting culture around it, and there is time for photos at one of the most recognizable fitness locations in the world. If you have booked our photo/video package, this is one of the signature shots.
From there, we walk the Boardwalk, break for a healthy lunch, and then drive up to Santa Monica to see where the whole Muscle Beach story started.
