A 6-hour guided tour of the gyms, beaches and stories that built the Golden Era of bodybuilding: visit Gold's Gym Venice, Muscle Beach Venice, the Venice Beach Boardwalk, and the Original Muscle Beach in Santa Monica, with van transport, a healthy lunch, and a working LA strength coach as your guide.

The Golden Era LA Tour is a 6-hour guided tour of the gyms, beaches and stories that built the Golden Era of bodybuilding. We take you to the places where Southern California fitness culture was born and where the legends of 1970s bodybuilding made their names, and your guide, a working Los Angeles strength coach, brings the history to life at every Stop.

What is The Golden Era LA Tour?

It is a small-group guided tour of Venice and Santa Monica, led by our coach, a working Los Angeles strength coach. You meet the group at a single Meeting Point in Venice, and from there your coach drives everyone in our van between every Stop. You visit the landmarks, you hear the stories and meet the people behind them, you eat well, and you see the most famous places in bodybuilding history with someone who knows them inside out.

It is a tour, not a workout: there is no training session, and no fitness level is needed.

What happens on the tour?

  1. Meet in Venice. The group gathers at the Meeting Point near Gold's Gym Venice. Your coach checks everyone in and runs through the day.
  2. Gold's Gym Venice. The first big chapter of the day: a stop at the gym known as the Mecca of Bodybuilding, carrying the name of the gym Joe Gold opened in Venice in 1965. Your coach tells the story of Joe Gold, Arnold, and the champions who made Venice famous.
  3. Muscle Beach Venice. We head to the ocean to see the famous outdoor weight pen on Ocean Front Walk, where your coach tells the story of beach lifting in Venice.
  4. The Venice Beach Boardwalk. A guided walk along Ocean Front Walk past the skate park, the basketball courts, and the murals.
  5. A healthy lunch. We sit down together and refuel. Lunch is included.
  6. Original Muscle Beach, Santa Monica. We drive north to the spot just south of the Santa Monica Pier where Muscle Beach began in the 1930s. If you want to try the public rings and bars, wear comfortable clothes.
  7. Back to Venice. The van returns the group to the Meeting Point.

Who is this tour for?

Anyone who loves the history of bodybuilding and fitness: lifters, Pumping Iron fans, and travelers curious about the culture behind the Golden Era. No fitness level is needed. The day involves plenty of walking, especially on the Boardwalk, but no workout. If you grew up on Pumping Iron, this is your day.

Guests must be 18 or older.

How do Departures work?

Online booking closes 12 hours before the start time. Every guest signs our waiver online before the tour.

What is the cancellation policy?

Free cancellation up to 48 hours before your Departure. You can also reschedule yourself, online, up to the same point.

Can I book a private tour?

Yes. Private Tours start from $999 for up to 4 guests, plus $150 per extra guest. You request a date and we build the day around your group. Private Tours can be cancelled free of charge up to 72 hours before.

Buying for a Golden Era fan? Gift cards are available.

Why book with us?

Because we are lifters too, and we love this history. We built this tour for people who would rather stand where it happened than read about it. You get the stories, the landmarks, the photos, and the food, without having to figure out parking in Venice.
