The Golden Era LA Tour is a guided, roughly six-hour Los Angeles gym tour that takes you to the vital places of bodybuilding history and tells you the stories behind them. You meet the group in Venice, and a working LA strength coach drives you in a van to the places where gym culture was made: Gold's Gym Venice, Muscle Beach Venice, the Venice Beach Boardwalk and the Original Muscle Beach in Santa Monica. A healthy lunch and a t-shirt are included, and it costs $199 per Seat.
It is a tour, not a workout: you go to see these landmarks and learn what happened at each one, not to train. This guide walks through the whole day, Stop by Stop.
What is the Golden Era bodybuilding history tour in LA?
It is a small-group guided tour for people who love the history of bodybuilding and fitness. The "Golden Era" is the period, roughly the 1960s and 1970s, when Venice became the center of the bodybuilding world and champions like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Franco Columbu trained there. The tour takes you to the landmarks of that story, in order, with a guide who knows it well and handles the driving, parking and lunch. If you want background before you go, start with What Was the Golden Era of Bodybuilding?
Where does the tour start?
Every tour starts and ends at a single Meeting Point in Venice, near the corner of Rose Avenue and Hampton Drive, a short walk from Gold's Gym Venice. Your coach confirms the exact spot, and shares a photo of the van, by email or text before your Departure.
A few practical notes:
- Arrive about 10 minutes early so the group can leave on time.
- Street parking is limited and heavily signed in this part of Venice. Read every sign carefully, or arrive by ride-share.
- Bring a valid photo ID. Every guest also signs a waiver online before the tour.
Your coach checks everyone in, runs through the plan and the group sets off.
How do you get between Stops?
By van, driven by your coach. Groups are capped at about 12 guests, which is the capacity of the van, so it stays a small-group day rather than a big bus tour. You do not need a car, parking at any Stop or a route between Venice and Santa Monica. The van also brings everyone back to the Meeting Point at the end.
Stop 1: Gold's Gym Venice
The first big chapter of the day is Gold's Gym Venice, the gym known around the world as "the Mecca of bodybuilding." This is a guided stop outside the gym. Entry is not part of the tour: the gym is a private business with its own guest policies, and LA Gym Tours is an independent operator with no affiliation to it.
What you learn here:
- How it started. Joe Gold, a regular of the Muscle Beach strength scene, opened the first Gold's Gym in August 1965 in a building he owned on Pacific Avenue in Venice. He built much of the equipment himself.
- How it became the Mecca. Through the late 1960s and 1970s the gym drew the best bodybuilders in the world, and Venice became the place serious lifters moved to.
- Pumping Iron. The 1977 documentary Pumping Iron used Gold's Gym as its main training location, and that film carried Venice bodybuilding to audiences far beyond the sport.
- Where it is now. Today Gold's Gym Venice is at 360 Hampton Drive, not far from the original Pacific Avenue site, and it marked its 60th anniversary in 2025.
There is time for photos outside the famous building. Our Gold's Gym Venice guide covers the stop itself, and The History of Gold's Gym Venice tells the full backstory.
Stop 2: Muscle Beach Venice
Next the group heads to the ocean and the Muscle Beach Venice weight pen on Ocean Front Walk, the outdoor lifting area that most people picture when they hear "Muscle Beach."
What you learn here:
- Why there is a weight pen in Venice at all. Lifting moved down the coast from Santa Monica after the original Muscle Beach was shut down in the late 1950s. Most histories date the first Venice platform to the early 1950s, although the City of Los Angeles gives 1963, and your coach explains how the two sites relate.
- Who lifted there. Golden Era names are linked to the Venice pen. Pumping Iron shows Arnold Schwarzenegger working out at Muscle Beach as well as Gold's Gym, and the pen became one of the most photographed outdoor gyms anywhere.
- The pen today. The City of Los Angeles refitted it with new racks, benches, machines and plates before reopening it in March 2022, and it has long hosted the annual Muscle Beach Championship bodybuilding contest.
This is a history and photo stop: watching the lifters is part of the experience, and nobody is asked to train. See the Muscle Beach Venice guide, and if the two Muscle Beaches confuse you, Muscle Beach Venice vs. the Original Muscle Beach explains the difference.
Stop 3: The Venice Beach Boardwalk, then lunch
From the pen, your coach leads a guided walk along Ocean Front Walk, the Venice Beach Boardwalk. This is the longest and most relaxed stretch of the day. You pass the skate park, the famous basketball courts and the murals, and your coach points out the places that matter to Venice's fitness and beach culture, with time for photos at the most recognizable spots. The Venice Beach Boardwalk guide has more.
Then everyone sits down together for a healthy lunch, which is included in your Seat. It is a natural break in the middle of the day: a chance to ask questions, compare notes on favorite champions and refuel before the drive north.
Stop 4: The Original Muscle Beach, Santa Monica
The last Stop is where the whole story began. The group drives north to the Original Muscle Beach, on the sand immediately south of the Santa Monica Pier.
What you learn here:
- The 1930s beginnings. After the 1933 Long Beach earthquake, a New Deal Works Progress Administration program installed gymnastics equipment on the Santa Monica beachfront. Acrobats, gymnasts and strongmen soon drew big crowds, and the spot became known as Muscle Beach.
- The pioneers. This was the scene of early fitness figures such as Jack LaLanne, and of Joe Gold himself, long before Gold's Gym existed.
- Why it closed. In the late 1950s the Santa Monica City Council ordered the equipment removed, and many regulars moved about two miles south to Venice, which links this Stop straight back to the start of your day.
- The site today. In 1989 the site was officially named "Original Muscle Beach." Today it focuses on gymnastics, rope climbing and acrobatics rather than heavy weightlifting.
If you want to, you can try the public rings and bars here. It is entirely optional, and wearing comfortable clothes is all you need to do. Afterwards the van returns the group to the Meeting Point in Venice. Read more in our Original Muscle Beach guide.
Seeing the day in this order, from the Mecca in Venice back to the Santa Monica sand, is a big part of the appeal: you are following the history of modern gym culture back to its roots. Muscle Beach History: From Santa Monica to Venice covers the full timeline.
How long is the Los Angeles gym tour, and how is the time split?
Plan for about six hours from meeting to drop-off. Roughly speaking, the day breaks down like this:
- Gold's Gym Venice: about 45 minutes.
- Muscle Beach Venice: about an hour.
- Venice Beach Boardwalk walk plus lunch: about an hour and three quarters.
- Original Muscle Beach, Santa Monica: about an hour.
The rest is check-in at the Meeting Point and the van rides in between. Timings on the day can shift a little with traffic and the group's pace.
What is included in the $199 Seat price?
Your Seat is all-inclusive:
- Van transport between every Stop, driven by your coach
