Quick take

  • One of the most famous beachfront promenades in the United States
  • Home to the Muscle Beach Venice weight pen, the skate park, and the basketball courts
  • Murals, street art, and street performers that reflect Venice culture
  • A paved beach bike path runs alongside it on the sand
  • The iconic "Venice" sign hangs over Windward Avenue nearby

The Venice Beach Boardwalk is where Los Angeles lets its personality out. Officially it is Ocean Front Walk, a paved promenade running along the sand in Venice, and on a busy day it holds skaters, cyclists, street performers, artists, tourists, locals, and a lot of people with very good tans. For lifters it has a special meaning: this is the strip where beach-fitness culture became famous, and it is home to the outdoor weight pen at Muscle Beach Venice.

What is the Venice Beach Boardwalk?

The Venice Beach Boardwalk is the common name for Ocean Front Walk, the beachfront promenade in Venice, a coastal neighborhood of the City of Los Angeles. It runs for a long stretch along the beach, with shops, food stands, murals, and open-air attractions on one side and the sand and ocean on the other.

Venice itself was founded in 1905 by developer Abbot Kinney, who built it as a seaside resort inspired by Venice, Italy, complete with canals. Some of those canals survive today in a quiet residential area a short walk inland. Over the century that followed, Venice developed a reputation as a creative, unconventional, beach-loving community, and the Boardwalk is where that reputation is on full display.

Why does the Boardwalk matter to lifters?

For fitness travelers, the Boardwalk is more than a tourist stroll. It is the setting for one of the most important chapters in bodybuilding history.

  • Muscle Beach Venice. The open-air weight pen on Ocean Front Walk became one of the most recognizable training spots in the world.
  • The Golden Era. In the 1970s, bodybuilders including Arnold Schwarzenegger and Franco Columbu trained in Venice, and their presence on the beach helped define the image of Southern California fitness.
  • Pumping Iron. The 1977 documentary showed this world to a global audience and made Venice a pilgrimage site for lifters.
  • Outdoor training culture. Today you will still see people running, cycling, doing calisthenics, and lifting outdoors along the beach.

What can you see on the Venice Beach Boardwalk?

Here are the highlights most visitors look for:

  • Muscle Beach Venice: The famous outdoor weight pen. Watch the lifters from the Boardwalk, one of the most photographed views in fitness.
  • Venice Skate Park: A beachfront concrete skate park known around the world. Even non-skaters stop to watch.
  • Venice Beach basketball courts: Famous outdoor courts where pickup games draw crowds.
  • Murals and street art: Large murals and graffiti walls reflect the neighborhood's artistic history.
  • The Venice sign: The lit "Venice" sign hanging over Windward Avenue near the Boardwalk is a classic photo spot.
  • Street performers and vendors: Musicians, dancers, artists, and all kinds of entertainers, especially on weekends.
  • The beach bike path: A paved path runs along the sand, popular with cyclists, runners, and skaters.

When is the best time to visit?

It depends on what you want:

  1. Early morning: Quiet, cool, often foggy. Best for a peaceful walk and photos without crowds.
  2. Late morning to early afternoon: The Boardwalk wakes up. Shops open, performers arrive, and the energy builds.
  3. Weekends and summer afternoons: Peak crowds, peak entertainment, and the hardest parking.
  4. Sunset: Beautiful light over the Pacific, and a great time for photos.

Southern California weather is mild most of the year, but coastal mornings can be overcast, especially in late spring and early summer. Bring a light layer either way.

Tips for visiting the Venice Beach Boardwalk

  • Walk it. The Boardwalk is best experienced on foot. Comfortable shoes matter.
  • Stay alert. Like any crowded tourist area, keep your phone and wallet secure and carry only what you need.
  • Protect yourself from the sun. Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and water.
  • Respect performers. Ask before filming someone up close, and tip if you stop to enjoy a show.
  • Be smart about parking. Beach lots fill up and street parking is heavily signed. Ride-share or a guided tour with transport removes the headache.
  • Watch for bikes and skaters. Stay off the bike path when walking.

How to combine the Boardwalk with a Golden Era day

The Boardwalk sits at the center of Venice's fitness landmarks, which makes it easy to build a full day around it:

That is exactly the route of The Golden Era LA Tour, except we handle the driving, parking, lunch, and storytelling for you.

The Boardwalk on our tour

On The Golden Era LA Tour, the Boardwalk walk comes right after our stop at the Muscle Beach pen. Your coach guides the group along Ocean Front Walk, points out the places that matter to fitness and Venice history, and leaves time for photos at the most recognizable spots. It is a relaxed stretch of the day, a chance to take in the culture before we sit down for a healthy lunch and continue to Santa Monica.

If you have booked our photo/video add-on, the Boardwalk provides some of the best backdrops of the day: murals, palm trees, the ocean, and the famous Venice energy.
